Written by: Tiffany Martinez, Education & Outreach Coordinator

Movies have an incredible power to raise awareness about tough topics, and some films tackle the harsh realities of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. These stories can be difficult to watch, but they’re essential for fostering understanding and empathy. We encourage all those who are interested in learning more about domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse to watch to seek out ways to expand their knowledge, and film/television can be a great method, but we also want you to know self-care is important! These shows/films can often be triggering, so we encourage you to take breaks when you need them and to be sure you're in the right mind-space before starting them.

Here are a few films we recommend and think are worth discussing:

Maid - Netflix

This gripping series follows a young mother escaping an abusive relationship while facing the challenges of a broken support system. It highlights the painful choices survivors must make in their quest for safety.

Audrie and Daisy - Netflix

A compelling documentary that follows the stories of two teenage girls who were sexually assaulted by people they thought were friends. It sheds light on the impact of social media and the often harsh judgment faced by survivors.

Unspeakable Acts - Netflix

This documentary recounts one of the worst child sex abuse scandals in U.S. history, focusing on the tireless work of psychologists and the resulting changes in legislation aimed at protecting children.

Unbelievable - Netflix

Inspired by true events, this series follows a teenager who reports her rape and then recants. It explores the complexities of trauma and the investigative process while emphasizing the importance of believing survivors.

Movies serve as powerful tools for raising awareness about abuse. By sharing compelling stories, educating audiences, and promoting empathy, films can drive conversations and inspire action. They remind us of the importance of listening to survivors and supporting initiatives that work towards prevention and healing.
